“We feel a great responsibility in, but are also very proud of, taking on such an important role in such a difficult international situation. The G20 Presidency, in fact, will allow us, together with the great and good of the world, to carry out our ideas to fight the pandemic and promote a sustainable, inclusive and resilient economic recovery”. This is how Minister Di Maio commented on Italy’s taking the reins of the G20 Presidency. During this term the Foreign Ministry will organise several high-profile political events.
The focus of the high-level events scheduled on 29 and 30 June and 5 October 2021will be on the issues of multilateralism, sustainable development and international trade.
On 29 June, Minister Di Maio will chair the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Matera, followed on the same day by a joint session with the Development Ministers. On 30 June, the Development Ministers will meet in Brindisi for an ad hoc session chaired by Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re. The topic at the heart of these meetings will be the strengthening of multilateralism as a key tool to tackle the pandemic, food security and sustainable development issues, with a special focus on the African continent.
On 5 October, Minister Di Maio will chair the meeting of the G20 Trade Ministers in Sorrento, dedicated to the adoption of measures to promote a sustainable and resilient global economic recovery, the reform of the World Trade Organization and the increase of the presence of micro, small and medium enterprises in global markets.
