Minister Di Maio speaks at the meeting of the Joint Foreign and Home Affairs Council

Today, Minister Luigi Di Maio participated by videoconference in the meeting of the Joint Foreign and Home Affairs Council dedicated to European migration strategies in the framework of the New EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Recalling the proposals contained in the national document shared by Italy at EU level, the Minister stressed the close link between the external and internal dimensions of the Union’s policies on migration. In particular, he emphasised the importance for Italy of the search for a balanced and comprehensive approach in the EU’s relations with the countries of origin and transit of migration flows to Europe. Specific reference was made to the regions of North Africa, Sahel, Horn of Africa.

Identifying specific objectives, establishing effective cooperation mechanisms with third countries, especially in the field of repatriation, and the availability of adequate financial resources are among the actions mentioned by Minister Di Maio as priorities for revitalising the EU partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood countries and aimed at the fair and inclusive management of irregular migration flows.
