FOREIGN MINISTRY NOTE – Minister Di Maio meets with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met today at the Foreign Office with his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis.

The two ministers took stock of the excellent state of bilateral relations, agreeing on the opportunity to further deepen political dialogue and strengthen economic cooperation, also by promoting partnerships between businesses from the two countries, in order to seize the opportunities offered by the recovery plans.

With regard to the Russian Federation, Minister Di Maio stressed the importance of maintaining a unified European twofold approach, accompanying messages of firmness with the opportunity to leave the door open to selective dialogue.

With regard to cooperation within NATO, Minister Di Maio emphasised the importance of maintaining an all-round approach, stressing the need to strengthen the Alliance’s southern flank.

The two interlocutors then touched on the issue of combating the pandemic, agreeing on the need to maintain EU coordination on restrictive measures and on the recognition of vaccination certificates, particularly in view of the summer holiday season.  Minister Di Maio then stressed the importance that all Member States ratify the EU Decision on the system of own resources as soon as possible, to allow the Next Generation EU Plan to be launched.
