On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the 10th Italy – Latin America and the Caribbean Conference, entitled “People, Planet, Prosperity. The future of an ancient partnership” will be held in Rome, with the participation of Minister Di Maio, ministers and vice ministers of the Latin American and Caribbean countries, and representatives of regional international organizations.
The conference is an occasion for strengthening Italy’s relations with an area of strategic interest for the country, in consideration of the deep historical, social, political and economic bonds, the cultural affinities and common values that exist between them. This year the Conference coincides with the period of Italian Presidency of the G20, providing an important stage for the promotion of inclusive policies centered on people, environmental safeguards and sustainable economic growth.
The Conference will be held at the Farnesina, in close collaboration with IILA, The Italy-Latin American Institute, the international organization that since 1966 joins Italy and the countries of that region in promoting reciprocal relations in a broad and growing spectrum of collaboration.
On Monday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m., a Special Event will be held, presenting the outcomes of the Falcone – Borsellino Project of international technical assistance in the sector of the rule of law and combating corruption and transnational organized crime, with the participation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, the Minister for the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese, the Justice Minister, Marta Cartabia, and the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni, as well as ministers and law enforcement officials from Latin American countries as well as the National Antimafia Prosecutor and leading authorities in civil society. The initiative, through the channel of the IILA, takes account of the particularities of the Latin American continent and Caribbean countries and represents a beachhead in the knowledge-building capacity of Italy in the field. The methods tested by our institutions in this area are considered best practices on the global level.
The works of the 10th Conference open on Tuesday October 26 at 9:30 a.m. with the inaugural plenary session, at which Minister Di Maio will speak. Vice Minister Sereni will also participate in the session.
After the plenary meeting, three interactive theme panels will meet simultaneously, with the participation of representatives from the countries and international organizations attending the conference, to discuss and decide on the three priority focus areas of the G20’s efforts in terms of relaunching the areas. Placing People at the center of the recovery and spotlighting the inequities that the pandemic has aggravated, particularly those regarding gender, the topic of the “Planet” will then be explored from the standpoint of the affinities of the challenges that must be dealt with by those countries that face on the sea, the climate crisis they share, and their essential role in enabling the recovery. On the subject of “Prosperity” the discussions will revolve around sustainability and the circular economy, as well as energy transition.
The conference will conclude with a final plenary session.
