Farnesina Secretary-General celebrates with Ambassador Ahsan 50th anniversary of Italy-Bangladesh diplomatic relations

The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Ettore Francesco Sequi, received Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Italy, Shameen Ahsan at the Farnesina today, ahead of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On 12 February 1972, immediately after Bangladesh won its independence, Italy was one of the very first countries to recognise the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and, subsequently, among the first to support its application for membership in the United Nations.

During the meeting, the Secretary-General extended to Ambassador Ahsan Minister Di Maio’s warm greetings to Abdul Momem, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. The talks were also an opportunity to assess the excellent relations between Rome and Dhaka and to consider strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration-related issues and on common interest sectors, such as energy and defence.
