ELMED: Italy expresses satisfaction over the approval of the EU funding for the electrical interconnection between Italy and Tunisia

Italy greatly welcomes Brussel’s approval of a sizable European allocation for the implementation of ELMED, the power interconnection project promoted by TERNA and its Tunisian counterpart STEG, providing for a 230 km-long 600 MW connection to Sicily.
ELMED will produce a quantum leap in the integration of the electricity markets on the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean, thus boosting our energy security as well as that of our partners, fostering the development of renewable energy sources in the African continent and adding a further piece to the long-term implementation of a full-fledged Euro-Mediterranean electrical grid.

The project – strongly supported from the beginning by both Italy and Tunisia, which also signed an inter-governmental Agreement that came into effect last January, representing the following step to the contribution of the Italian Cooperation Service for the feasibility study and to the issued of trust funds by the World Bank – confirms the strategic nature of the Italo-Tunisian partnership for the development of the entire Mediterranean region.
