Undersecretary of State Giorgio Silli meets Panama’s Deputy Minister Yill del Carmen Otero and Minister Milciades Concepción in Panama and participates in the Consular Meeting for Latin America

Yesterday, the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli, who was on a diplomatic mission to Panama, met with the Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Cooperation, Yill del Carmen Otero, and the Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción. “A great opportunity to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between Italy and Panama and expand the scope of cooperation, to the mutual benefit of our countries”, said Undersecretary Silli.

“We cooperate with Panama with regard to legal diplomacy, the fight against corruption, and scientific, technological, and space-related research. Today the country aspires to become a regional hub for high-tech products and services, generating potential new opportunities for our businesses and for institutional collaborations”.

“Civil protection – Panama is home to a UN humanitarian response depot -, and space research – the COPERNICUS Regional Centre for satellite observation for environmental and security purposes is expected to open within this year – are sectors where the Italian experience can make the difference”.

To the two representatives of the Panamanian government, Undersecretary Silli explained “in depth the strengths of Rome’s candidacy to host Expo 2030, gathering their interest”.

In addition, Undersecretary Silli talked to Deputy Minister Yill del Carmen Otero about “Italy’s commitment to the United Nations, as a Focal Point of the Uniting for Consensus group, for a reform making the Security Council more democratic, accountable, representative, transparent and effective, with the creation of new long-term seats assigned to regional groups”.

During the meeting with the Minister of Environment Milciades Concepción it was also discussed the “strong interest in collaborating in environmental monitoring activities, also thanks to the European Copernicus programme, and in the protection of the oceans in view of the VIII Our Ocean 2023 Conference”, added Undersecretary Silli.

Also yesterday, Undersecretary Silli met with representatives of the local Italian community, including representatives of the COMITES (Committee of Italians Abroad) and the staff of the Embassy, ​​with a view to operational and profitable exchanges, “useful to best respond to the needs of our compatriots abroad”, commented Undersecretary Silli in the margins of his concluding speech at the Consular coordination meeting dedicated to the Latin American network, which began last Thursday. The event brought together the officials in charge of 30 consular offices in the Latin American area, with the aim of exchanging experiences, good practices and finding paths for innovation. All this had the goal of improving services for the benefit of Italians abroad.

Today, Undersecretary Silli will travel from Panama to Mexico in order to meet with the Mexican Minister of Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, the Undersecretaries for Foreign Affairs Carmen Moreno Toscano, Martha Delgado and Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, the Undersecretary for Economy Alejandro Encinas Najera, as well as to talk with representatives of the local Italian community and Italian companies in Mexico.
