The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, will be in Tunis tomorrow, 18 January 2023, to meet the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, and their respective counterparts.
Tajani and Piantedosi’s mission to Tunisia, a strategic partner of Italy, follows those the two ministers carried out in Ankara last Friday and Monday and is part of a strategy of in-depth dialogue with the main countries in the enlarged Mediterranean, as promoted by the Italian government and aimed at strengthening cooperation in the political, economic and migration spheres.
Together with President Saied and Ministers Jerandi and Charfeddine, Deputy Prime Minister Tajani and Minister Piantedosi will first discuss how Italy and Tunisia can deal with the increase in departures towards Italy along the Central Mediterranean route.
Also on the agenda will be bilateral economic cooperation, with a focus on the opportunities for growth in trade exchange, which has returned to full capacity after the pandemic, and cooperation in the energy sphere, which has benefited from the recent launch of the ELMED strategic infrastructure – a maritime electricity interconnection project between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
