Telephone conversation of the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, with the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nabil Ammar

Today, 27 February 2023, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, had a telephone conversation with the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nabil Ammar.

First and foremost, the head of Italian diplomacy wished to express his sympathy to the Tunisian people and authorities at this particularly delicate time for the country, noting that Tunisia’s stability and prosperity are crucial for the stability of the entire Mediterranean region, albeit in compliance with fundamental rights and freedoms.

Mr. Tajani reiterated his wish for closer bilateral cooperation between Italy and Tunisia, which is essential to better address challenges in the Mediterranean.

“The Italian government is at the forefront in supporting Tunisia in border control activities, the fight against human trafficking, as well as the creation of legal routes to Italy for Tunisian workers and the creation of training opportunities as an alternative to migration”, Tajani commented.

The Italian Deputy Prime Minister also recalled his recent phone call with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, during which he expressed the need for the Fund to quickly intervene in favour of Tunisian stabilisation and growth with economic and financial support. Finally, he underlined Italy’s support for Tunisia also within the European Union.
