On the instructions of the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Italy was summoned to the Farnesina today in connection with the tragic death of Alexei Navalny in prison.
Ambassador Alexey Paramonov was informed of Italy’s expectation that full clarity be provided on the circumstances of the death of Navalny, who had been sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment in extremely harsh conditions for his political activity and his fight against corruption.
In line with its other European partners, Italy, which defends the inalienable values of freedom and democracy, will continue to call on the Russian Federation to put an end to the unacceptable persecution of political dissent and to guarantee the right to full freedom of expression, without any restrictions on civil and political rights.
