The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, received the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, Irene Fellin, at the Foreign Ministry.
The Undersecretary expressed her appreciation for the Atlantic Alliance’s new multi-year strategy for implementing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, which will be adopted by the Heads of State and Government at the NATO Summit in Washington next July.
This strategy will enable NATO to be even more at the forefront in implementing the Agenda, which originated with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and aims – inter alia – to promote women’s full and effective participation in negotiation processes and to combat all forms of violence against women and girls in armed conflicts.
The irreplaceable contribution provided by the Alliance in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine was discussed, in line with the three areas of NATO action: deterrence and defence; crisis prevention and management; cooperative security.
Italy plays a leading role worldwide in the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. It was among the initial supporters of Resolution 1325 and among the first to adopt a National Action Plan in 2010, coordinated by the Foreign Ministry and now in its fourth edition.
Undersecretary Tripodi and Special Representative Fellin also discussed possible synergies and joint activities in view of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Agenda, which will take place in 2025, the year in which the fifth Italian National Action Plan will enter into force.
