The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, is on a mission to Brussels to take part in the EU Foreign Affairs Council and the 9th International Conference on Syria.

At the Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the focus will first of all be on the war in Ukraine and the prospects for achieving a just peace, also thanks to the recent US initiative. The meeting will continue with a wide-ranging discussion on the situation in the Middle East, focused specifically on the situation in Syria and Iran. Ministers will then have an exchange of views on the prospects for transatlantic relations and European security, also in view of the subsequent discussion at the European Council.

Minister Tajani said: “At the Foreign Affairs Council I will reaffirm the importance of preserving transatlantic unity. As confirmed by the G7 Foreign Ministers‘ meeting in Canada, coordination between allies remains an essential factor in addressing the many international challenges, starting with the efforts to achieve a just peace in Ukraine.” He will stress the need for Europe to do more for its own security and to strengthen its strategic autonomy and the European pillar of NATO, working to strengthen the dialogue with the United States on all dossiers, first and foremost trade, as also discussed in the recent meeting with Secretary of State Rubio.

Minister Tajani will also take part in the 9th International Conference in support of Syria, testifying to Italy’s strong commitment to accompanying the transition and reconciliation process. During the meeting, Minister Tajani will confirm Italy’s readiness to intervene to support and restore, together with partners, the country’s critical sectors in order to alleviate the needs of the civilian population.
