The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, participated, on behalf of Minister Antonio Tajani, in the G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting held in Paris. The discussions focused on non-market policies and practices and issues of excess production capacity, the resilience of critical minerals value chains, and the outcomes of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference.
The Undersecretary underlined that, in the current international context, economic security is increasingly becoming a structural dimension of geopolitical competition, particularly with regard to access to and control over critical minerals. Italy reaffirmed its support for US-led initiatives launched and announced in this field. Italy also stressed the need to reduce strategic dependencies on overly concentrated supply chains, while promoting greater diversification of sources, the integration of critical minerals into trade negotiations, the development of strategic partnerships with resource-rich countries, as well as investment in extraction, processing, recovery and recycling capacities.
Undersecretary Tripodi further drew attention to non-market policies and practices, noting that distortive public interventions may alter competitive conditions and contribute to excess capacity phenomena.
