The first technical-level meeting of the Global Alliance on the Two-State Solution took place yesterday afternoon at the Farnesina. The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of the progress made in the political process between Israel and Palestine, whilst exploring new synergies with UNSC Resolution 2803 and the structures of the Board of Peace, one year on from the New York Declaration and ahead of the Alliance’s ministerial meeting scheduled for September during UN Week in New York.
The proceedings were led by 25 delegations, including the co-chairing countries of the Working Groups of the Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, as well as other countries and organisations featured in the dossier: the Arab League, Egypt, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, the Netherlands, Turkey, Qatar, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Ireland, Italy, Japan, France, Spain, Jordan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, Norway. Representatives from Palestine and the United Nations were also present. Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s High Representative for Gaza, who is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the 20-Point Peace Plan, also addressed the meeting remotely.
At the end of yesterday’s session, a number of practical ideas for the ministerial meeting in September emerged, which will be finalised over the coming weeks. This morning will see the high-level segment, co-chaired by Minister Tajani and the Saudi Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, with the participation of the Palestinian Authority ‘s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Varsen Aghabekian. The two-day event will conclude with a seminar on interfaith dialogue.
