The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, gave an interview to the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat in which he emphasised Saudi Arabia’s strategic role for Italy, describing the partnership with Riyadh as ‘one of the pillars of Italy’s engagement in the region’. Tajani highlighted the growing convergence between the two countries on dialogue, regional stability, security and sustainable growth.
With regard to Gaza, Tajani reiterated Italy’s commitment to a political solution to the crisis and to reviving the prospect of a Two-State Solution, referring to the meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution recently hosted in Rome and to close cooperation with Saudi Arabia. The Minister emphasised that the Two-State Solution remains the only credible option for guaranteeing Israel’s security and the creation of a free, democratic and peaceful Palestinian State. Tajani also highlighted Italy’s humanitarian and institutional commitment, including the ‘Food for Gaza’ initiative and the additional allocation of EUR 10 million to the Palestinian National Authority via the United Nations.
On the situation in Lebanon, Tajani reiterated Italy’s strong support for the country’s sovereignty and its legitimate institutions, starting with President Joseph Aoun, emphasising the importance of the gradual restoration of state authority across the whole of the country and the disarmament of Hezbollah. The Minister highlighted Italy’s role as a partner and facilitator of regional dialogue, as demonstrated by the choice of Rome as the venue for the latest round of talks between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States. As UNIFIL draws to a close, Italy is also working alongside its international partners to ensure a secure transition that avoids any security vacuum and preserves stability in southern Lebanon.
