The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Massimo Dell’Utri, has concluded a mission to Brazil, with stops in São Paulo and Porto Alegre, following on from Minister Tajani’s mission. The mission focused on relations with the Italian community, the strengthening of consular services and the role of Italians abroad as a bridge between Italy and their countries of residence.
Brazil is one of the world’s largest destinations for Italians living abroad: as at 31 July 2026, there were 970,000 Italian citizens registered with the consular authorities, of whom over 400,000 were in São Paulo and more than 140,000 in Porto Alegre. In addition to these, there is a community of around 32 million people of Italian descent. During the mission, particular attention was paid to consular services, digitalisation and innovation, in light of the growth of the Italian community. In 2025 the Italian consular network in Brazil issued over 93,000 passports, whilst the use of digital services and the issuance of the Electronic Identity Card increased. Undersecretary Dell’Utri emphasized: “Our aim is to continue improving services, simplifying procedures and investing in innovation, to bring the public administration ever closer to citizens.”
The mission also addressed the issue of participation and representation of Italian communities abroad, particularly in view of the elections to renew the Com.It.Es., which in Brazil will involve seven Committees.
