The meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh, co-chaired by Italy and the United States, was held today at the Farnesina with the aim of reviving the international community’s efforts against the ISIS terrorist threat. The work was chaired by Director General for Political Affairs Cecilia Piccioni and the US Special Envoy for Iraq and Syria, Ambassador Tom Barrack.
During the meeting, new financial commitments were announced to strengthen the capacities of the Syrian and Iraqi governments, including in support of displaced populations. Delegates also discussed how to improve the coordination of international donors supporting counter-terrorism and stabilisation efforts in Iraq and Syria.
“Today’s meeting confirmed our strong common commitment to defeating ISIS and fighting terrorism in all its forms. We must prevent ISIS from regaining strength, ensure the safety of our citizens and promote stability in the region, also in order to contain trafficking and irregular migratory flows. Italy and the United States are key partners in this endeavour. We will continue to work side by side, sharing information and further strengthening our cooperation in the fight against international terrorism”, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani.
