The photo exhibition ‘Embracing the infinite. The eternal search of Giuseppe Tucci’, dedicated to the figure of the great orientalist, explorer and tibetologist, was inaugurated on Monday 27 July 2026, in the presence of the Ambassador of Italy to Mongolia, Giovanna Piccarreta. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 5 August 2026.
The ceremony was attended by Federico Roberto Antonelli, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Beijing; John McCourt, Rector of the University of Macerata; and Erdmaa Dagva, Deputy Director of the Museum. Other speakers included the co-scientific curator Oscar Nalesini (ISMEO), Professor Dulam Sedenjav of the National University of Mongolia, Lawyer Gianfranco Borgani (Arte Nomade) and researcher Batbayar Dorj.
The Mongolian Ministry of Culture, Sport, Tourism and Youth was represented by the State Secretary of Mongolia Government Bat-Erdene. Ambassador Giovanna Piccarreta read out the message sent by the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
Curated by Oscar Nalesini and Cristiana Turini, the exhibition is organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing and the University of Macerata, in collaboration with ISMEO, the Embassy of Italy in Mongolia, Istituto Luce – Cinecittà and the MUCIV-Museum of Civilisation in Rome, under the patronage of the Municipality of Macerata and the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
The exhibition features 66 photographs and documentary materials that trace Tucci’s expeditions to Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, painting a portrait of one of the greatest scholars of the twentieth century. The Mongolian leg of the tour includes a screening of the short film ‘Nelle steppe della Mongolia’ (In the steppes of Mongolia) by Istituto Luce – Cinecittà, with commentary by Tucci, and a panel discussion focusing on his relationship with Mongolia.
