Ms Sereni: from Ponza message of integration Mediterranean shores

“The beautiful island of Ponza, together with Ventotene, thanks to Altiero Spinelli’s Manifesto, represents a very important symbol in the construction of European Integration, precious corners of the Mediterranean where a strong idea was born, a pillar that has marked and marks the history of our continent”.

This was stated by Deputy Minister Marina Sereni, opening the work of the webinar promoted by the Italian Network for Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue, which introduces the “Ponza Prima-Med Initiative” on the environment, climate change, circular economy and food, also considering the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the area.

“We are about to celebrate the 25thanniversary of the Barcelona Declaration –Ms Sereni added– thanks to which Mediterranean shores have been able to get closer in these decades. Now more than ever it is time to work for a common, shared and better future in the relations between the countries overlooking this sea”.

“The current moment that forces us to observe a physical distance between us – the Deputy Minister continued – must be an opportunity to reflect and make us even more aware of how much global and regional interdependence is an unavoidable factor in international relations.

An interdependence that for Europe has increasingly to become a strategic investment towards the enlarged Mediterranean and Africa: health, green economy, fight against climate change, food security, culture, must become the cornerstones of a positive common agenda to both sides of the Mediterranean”.
