Vice Deputy Minister Emanuela Del Re attended in virtual format the today’s ministerial conference of the Community of Democracies for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Warsaw Declaration of 2000, signed by 106 countries, including Italy.
In her speech, the Deputy Minister stressed the continuing validity of the Warsaw Declaration, reaffirming Italy’s commitment to achieving its objectives, at a time when democracies are facing an unprecedented series of challenges, some of which made, even more, pressing by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In particular, the Vice Minister highlighted the dangerousness of narratives that highlight the supposed ineffectiveness of democracies in facing the pandemic. “We cannot play defence; we must enhance the results obtained by our democracies, which have shown their ability to adapt to extraordinary times with extraordinary measures while ensuring proportionality, transience and transparency; an approach that has allowed us to protect the health and well-being of our fellow citizens while remaining anchored to democratic values, the rule of law and human rights”.
