Del Re presides over meeting on the humanitarian situation in Mali

Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re chaired a meeting in VTC on the humanitarian situation in Mali, attended by officials and experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), Caritas, the Italian Red Cross and representatives of civil society organizations (CSOs).

The Vice Minister convened this meeting to coordinate the Italian system of cooperation in the belief that Mali, and more generally the whole Sahel region, has a strategic importance for our country. “Stability and security can be fostered only with an integrated, humanitarian, development and security approach” – said the Vice Minister – “In this phase of political uncertainty in Mali, we must first of all focus on the needs of the population, aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic and its indirect consequences”.

“The Italian commitment in Mali will be increasingly significant. It responds to a widespread demand for greater Italian involvement in the country” – he added – “In this context, we firmly believe in the need for greater coordination at the international level and with local actors, in order to make our contribution more focused and effective, avoiding duplication and overlap”.

In Mali, the Italian Cooperation is currently present both with aid credits and with development interventions financed with donated resources. Further initiatives are in preparation. The Italian CSOs are present with various projects on the ground.
