Del Re: the rule of law essential in combating the pandemic

“Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, spoke at the opening of the Assembly of Parties of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), held in video conference, to reaffirm Italy’s political support to the Organization and the focus on the characteristic issues of its mandate, namely the promotion of sustainable development based on the rule of law and access to justice for all.

“As Covid-19 sweeps across every corner in the world, the rule of law has become more essential than ever, because the effectiveness of the government measures to contain the virus and support the subsequent economic recovery depends on the ability of all public institutions to provide transparent, effective and accountable policies and actions.” – the Vice Minister started.

“In my previous ten-year work experience in conflict areas, I was able to witness first hand how legal empowerment can help reduce inequality by enabling poor, marginalised and vulnerable groups to have access to essential public services, such as justice, health and education.” – she continued – “In recent years we have worked together to strengthen the role and activities of the IDLO and now we see its growing relevance as an important component of the hub of international organisations in Rome.

In particular, the Vice Minister mentioned IDLO’s efforts to improve justice for women and girls, especially against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, by supporting access to justice to overcome ongoing restrictions on mobility and improve efficiency and transparency in the administration of justice in Countries such as Afghanistan, Kenya, Somalia and Tunisia.

“To achieve its mandate, the IDLO needs a renewed financial and political commitment from all of us. We must join forces to achieve sustainable development and peace through responsible institutions and universal access to justice everywhere: supporting the IDLO can make a real difference.” – Vice Minister Del Re concluded.”
