Vice Minister Sereni met today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome with Iraqi Deputy for Foreign Minister Nizar Issa Al Khairullah, as part of the visit to Italy of a delegation of the Iraqi Government led by Prime Minister Al-Kathimi.
The talks focused on the prospects for strengthening the bilateral partnership through the intensification of contacts at the political level and the revival of economic, commercial and cultural cooperation.
“We look favourably at the economic reforms underway in Iraq, Vice Minister Sereni declared. We hope that such reforms will encourage greater investment, always taking into account capital and investors’ safety”.
The issue of security was also addressed. Sereni declared, “Italy will continue to work alongside Iraq in the fight against terrorism and to guarantee stability to the country and Iraqi citizens, especially in the delicate electoral phase that will begin in the autumn. The smooth running of the elections will be an important moment in witnessing the success of international efforts, including Italian ones, to consolidate democracy in Iraq”.
Sereni and Al Khairullah finally agreed to organise the next session of the Joint Commission in Baghdad as soon as conditions allow.
