World Food Day (Rome, 16 October 2013) – Accreditation

On Wednesday 16 October 2013 an international conference on “Global food losses and waste: from reduction to prevention for a sustainable agro-food system” will take place at the FAO headquarters in Rome. The conference, a World Food Day initiative, will begin at 14.00.

The conference, organised by the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate General for Development Cooperation, will be opened by Deputy Minister Lapo Pistelli and closed by Foreign Minister Emma Bonino. Also taking part will be experts from Italy and abroad and representatives of the government and of UN organisations from the Roman food and agricultural “hub”: FAO, IFAD and WFP. The principal NGO’s working in the sector will also be taking part.

Foreign Minister Emma Bonino will be speaking during the closing session, at around 17.00. Other speakers include the Health Minister, Beatrice Lorenzin; the Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea, Andrea Orlando; FAO Director General Josè Graziano da Silva; the President of IFAD, Kanayo F. Nwanze; and the Executive Director of the WFP, Ertharin Cousin.

Also on 16 October, an awareness-raising event entitled “Primo non sprecare” will take place at Eataly, in the Ostiense Station, using a Last Minute Market format. The idea is to produce meals using excess products from the agri-food supply chain and “zero-kilometre” products. The same anti-waste criteria will be applied during the day in the FAO and Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff canteens.

Journalists, photographers and TV crews interested in following the event should apply for accreditation at the main entrance of the FAO, in Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, from 13.30 onwards. You will need your press card or a letter on your media organisation’s letterhead, as well as your identity document. To apply in advance, contact FAO-Newsroom@fao.org.
