UPDATE

PRESS ACCREDITATION NOTE

 Giornata dell’Archeologia italiana all’estero

Rome, Campidoglio (9 May 2023)

On Tuesday 9 May 2023, the Giornata dell’Archeologia Italiana all’estero (Italian Archaeology Abroad Day) will be held in Rome, at the Campidoglio.

The initiative, organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome, aims to celebrate Italian excellence in archaeological research abroad – conducted for decades in the five continents by the Archaeological Missions financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (246 in 2022) – with the aim of raising awareness and attention among the general public and the competent Parliamentary bodies. The event will be attended not only by the Ambassadors of the countries in which the Missions operate, but also by qualified representatives of the institutional and academic world and by 180 Directors of archaeological missions.

The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Aula Giulio Cesare and will be opened by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, with speeches by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, and the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

A photo opportunity is scheduled at the end of the opening session.

From 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the proceedings will continue in the Sala della Protomoteca, with a Round Table discussion moderated by the Director General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, Pasquale Terracciano, devoted to illustrating the most relevant elements and strengths of the prominent Italian Missions financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).

Starting at 2:00 p.m., 8 parallel thematic sessions will be held. They will be organised in geographic areas following a chrono-thematic approach, and will be moderated by the Directors specialised in each field of research.

At 6:30 p.m., Rome’s Superintendent for Cultural Heritage, Prof. Claudio Parisi Presicce, will present the final reports of the 8 moderators. The closing speech of the event will be delivered by Italian Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi.

Only the opening session and the institutional speeches will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
