The women in the ranks of the Afghan Army will be able to count on a healthcare facility expressly customised to their needs, in order to protect their right to health and assure them a balanced advancement in their professional career and family life. This was made possible thanks to an 8.5-million-dollar contribution that Italy decided to make for the construction of a new Paediatrics and Obstetrics Clinic at the Kabul National Military Hospital. The clinic will give high-quality services to army women and their children, providing them with a safe and protected environment in which to obtain assistance.
The initiative falls within the scope of Italy’s broader action in Afghanistan, aimed at promoting the active participation of women in the Country’s social, political and institutional life. As highlighted by the Italian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Roberto Cantone, at the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Afghan Ministry of Defence, at the presence of the Afghan Minister of Defence: “Italy has chosen to stand by women, who play a crucial role in the Country’s peace and reconciliation process. To act in favour of the female component of the Afghan society is one of Italy’s priority goals in Afghanistan and is an essential condition for looking at the future of the Country with optimism.”
