Bahia Blanca: event in honour of Gino Bartali

Italy-Argentina: A Tribute to Gino Bartali, Champion and Symbol of Anti-Semitism

The Consulate General of Italy in Bahia Blanca, together with the local Chapter of the the Jewish Association B’nai B’rith, organized a commemorative event in honour of Gino Bartali. This initiative was part of the activity of the Italian Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). During this event, the role of the legendary Italian cyclist during World War 2 was remembered in the saving of hundreds of Jews. For this reason, Gino Bartali was granted honorary citizenship by the State of Israel and the status of ‘Righteous among the Nations’.
The most important local authorities took part in the ceremony, which was hosted in the offices on the Consulate General of Bahia Blanca, along with representatives of the local Italian and Jewish community and the academic world.
B’nai B’rith gave the Consul General, Mr. Antonio Petrarulo, a commemorative parchment dedicated to the Italian cycling legend. It will be sent to the Gino Bartali Museum of Cycling of the City of Florence.
