Holocaust Day. Hong Kong hosts Klezmer concert

Marking January 27’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong is to host a Klezmer music and Yiddish song concert.

Guest performers include sax player and leading contemporary Klezmer musician Gabriele Coen, pianist Pietro Lussu and, with three feature performances, singer Barbara Eramo. Seeking to provide a broad overview of Jewish musical culture, the concert seeks to illustrate the genre’s long and troubled cultural journey into the present day – the hallmarks of which are four restless centuries. The song and music repertoire brings to the fore the culture’s east-European roots, migration to the United States and Jazz influences – as epitomised by the likes of George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Mickey Katz and John Zorn – and contemporary European influences.
