The Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai and the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai present the exhibition “MONET VAN GOGH and the masters of modernism – Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome,” organsed by the Meet You Museum in Hangzhou and the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GNAM) in Rome, scheduled from 15 April to 2 July 2023.

The exhibition features 48 works by 36 artists, including Monet, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Pollock, Joan Miró, de Chirico, and Duchamp, who were active between 1865 and 1972, and ranges from various techniques such as oil painting and sculpture to collage, photography, and installations. The works on display intriguingly lead back to marvellous phases of modern art.

Prominent works in the exhibition include the Water Lilies (1897-1899) by Claude Monet, founder of French Impressionism; the Portrait of Madame Ginoux (1889) by Vincent van Gogh, Dutch post-impressionist painter and pioneer of expressionism; the Reclining Nude (1918-1919) by Amedeo Modigliani, one of the representative artists of Italian Expressionism and famous for his portraits of women; Hector and Andromache (1924) by Giorgio de Chirico, among the founders of the artistic current of metaphysical painting and forerunner of surrealism.
