The Italian Embassy in Prague is organising a conference in the Baroque Chapel of the Italian Cultural Institute on the importance for the community of preserving the quality of the night sky.
The event, jointly coordinated by the Space Attaché Maria Cristina Falvella, will be introduced by Ambassador Mauro Marsili and will be attended by Professor Piero Benvenuti, internationally renowned astronomer and Secretary General of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the world’s largest astronomical organisation. Authoritative representatives of the Astronomical Observatories and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic are also expected to participate.
Large satellite constellations today offer an important opportunity to improve global connectivity and provide state-of-the-art services on Earth. However, the increasing number of satellites orbiting the Earth drastically limits astronomical observations. The conference will focus on the harmonisation of these conflicting requirements and their consequences. A topic that was also recently addressed by the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS).
