For the first time, the Embassy of Italy in Berlin is taking part in the official programme of Berlin Art Week with Caravaggio × Berlinde De Bruyckere, bringing Caravaggio’s Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy into dialogue with a new work by Berlinde De Bruyckere. The opening, held at the Embassy, brought together representatives of institutions, the cultural sector, the art world and the media.
Ambassador Fabrizio Bucci highlighted the transformation of the Embassy into an open cultural space, capable of fostering new forms of expression. The project, curated by Tjioe Meyer Hecken and Felipe Schwager, brings together four centuries of art history around themes such as ecstasy, suffering, desire and the metamorphosis of the body.
Following its opening on 7 September, the exhibition will feature prominently in the Featured Night on 11 September and will be open to visitors by appointment until 25 September. Around this central project, the Embassy is also contributing to Berlin Art Week through an event dedicated to Maurizio Cattelan’s NIGHT at the Neue Nationalgalerie and by taking part in the finissage of Giulia Andreani’s Sabotage at the Hamburger Bahnhof.
The Embassy’s participation in Berlin Art Week forms part of its ongoing transformation into a cultural hub, strengthening dialogue with the German and Italian art scenes. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see Ore piccole, an exhibition realised in partnership with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
In this context, art continues to represent one of the Embassy’s most effective means of fostering new encounters, ideas and projects, while showcasing contemporary Italy in Germany.
