Deputy Minister Edmondo Cirielli chaired the 26th meeting of the National Committee for Humanitarian Action against Anti-Personnel Mines (CNAUMA)

At the Foreign Ministry, this morning Deputy Minister Edmondo Cirielli opened the 26th meeting of the National Committee for Humanitarian Action against Anti-Personnel Mines (CNAUMA), an informal body established by Law No. 374 of 29 October 1997 on “Rules for Banning Anti-Personnel Mines”.

It was attended, as usual, by representatives of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and civil society agencies and organisations involved in humanitarian demining: AICS, the Italian Campaign Against Landmines, the Italian Red Cross, Archivio Disarmo, the National Association of Civilian War Victims, Associazione Italiana Imprese di Bonifica, CEIA S.p.A, the Association for Cooperation and Humanitarian Support, and Associazione Nazionale Reduci Prigionia (the National Association of Former Prisoners of War).

Concern over the indiscriminate use of anti-personnel mines and cluster munition in conflicts was emphasised, and Italy’s strong commitment to the universalisation and full implementation of the relevant Ottawa and Oslo International Conventions was reaffirmed.

During the meeting, Italy’s commitment was reaffirmed to contribute to the international community’s action for mine clearance in several geographical areas, and to implement programmes and actions for prevention, humanitarian demining, victim assistance and risk education.
