The ISIS threat was under the scrutiny of the UN Security Council on the eve of the General Assembly, along with the problems linked with climate change. The struggle against ISIS was the central focus of a high-level open debate on Iraq in which Federica Mogherini also participated. “We must join forces because global threats call for global responses”, she said. Minister Mogherini underscored the importance that the debate on ISIS take place within the UN framework so as to “help us avert one of the greatest risks: that this coalition be viewed as a Western coalition against Islam”. The meeting, chaired by US Secretary of State John Kerry, served to reiterate international support for the new Iraqi government and to examine the struggle against ISIS and the humanitarian emergency in the region.
The “Ebola” risk
The other emergency is the Ebola virus, “a threat to international peace and security” according to the alarm launched by the United Nations during the Security Council session of 18 September, which adopted a resolution (Italy was among its cosponsors) to strengthen the global response to the lethal virus’ spread in Western Africa, whose nations, said the UN appeal, the international community “must not leave isolated”.
