Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani met with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who is in Rome in his capacity as mediator for the new round of high-level talks between the United States and Iran.
The initial US-Iran talks on the nuclear programme took place in Muscat on 12 April, hosted at Minister al-Busaidi’s residence. At the request of both parties, the second session of the talks is now being hosted in Italy.
During the meeting, Minister Tajani welcomed Oman’s mediation efforts, stating: “Italy gives its full support to Oman’s mediation between the US and Iran”. Minister al-Busaidi expressed his deep appreciation for the Italian Government’s willingness to facilitate dialogue between the parties in a calm and productive setting. “In the face of numerous political and security challenges in a highly volatile regional context, Italy stands ready to support any further initiative in favour of peace and international stability”, said Tajani.
The Italian side also expressed the hope that these talks will provide strong momentum to the negotiations between the US Administration and the Iranian Government in the pursuit of a diplomatic solution—one that is essential for the stability of the entire Middle East. This issue remains at the heart of Italy’s diplomatic efforts, including Minister Tajani’s ongoing engagement with the US Administration, his Iranian counterpart Araghchi, and his frequent dialogue with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
