The Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the National Council of Journalists and the National Federation of the Italian Press, are today hosting the seminar “Safe journalists: the need to report, the duty to protect” at Villa Madama.
Drawing on best practices, testimonials and first-hand experiences, the seminar aims to provide practical safety guidelines to be followed before and during reporting assignments abroad. Rising international tensions and the increasing number of conflicts call for a concrete reflection on how to ensure that journalists and media professionals – essential witnesses of society, even in the most hazardous contexts – can carry out their work in the safest possible conditions.
Editors, newspaper directors, foreign correspondents and experts will exchange views on how to effectively protect journalists operating in some of the world’s most sensitive – and often high-risk – areas, particularly in zones of active conflict. On this occasion, the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present a “ten-point guide” outlining best practices, with the aim of providing newsrooms and professional associations with appropriate models for risk assessment and mitigation.
