On the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack in Nice on July 14, 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, paid tribute to the 86 victims of the massacre, remembering in particular the five Italian citizens – Mario Casati, Maria Grazia Ascoli, Angelo D’Agostino, Gianna Muset, and Carla Gaveglio – and the Italian-American citizen, Nicolas Leslie. In his message on the occasion, the Minister expressed the Italian government’s closeness to the victims’ families, the survivors, and all those involved in the attack, reiterating: “You have not been forgotten. You will never be forgotten.”

Minister Tajani emphasized that the attack hit not only France, but the whole of Europe and the values of freedom, democracy, and coexistence that unite it. While recalling the deep bond between Italy and France, strengthened by the recent Intergovernmental Summit in Antibes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated Italy’s full solidarity with the French people and their shared commitment to the fight against all forms of terrorism through ever closer cooperation between the institutions, security forces and law enforcement agencies of the two countries.

While recalling that the terrorist threat continues to evolve, the Minister reaffirmed Italy’s determination to fight terrorism and those who fuel it relentlessly. “The lesson of Nice is that freedom is stronger than fear,” Tajani emphasized, noting that the Promenade des Anglais, once again a place of life and encounter, is the symbol of resilience of European democracies and the most authentic way to honour the memory of those who lost their lives on that tragic night.
