Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli attended the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The mission’s central commitment was the G7 Development Ministerial Meeting, at which the Deputy Minister participated, valuing the contribution and innovation of Italian cooperation in the world and, in particular, in the increasingly intense collaboration with African partners, in line with the Mattei Plan for Africa.
The Deputy Minister also participated in the High-Level Round table on Gaza recovery, co-chaired by Egypt, Germany, France and the European Commission, reaffirming Italy’s support for the two-state solution and for the civilian population, through initiatives such as Food for Gaza, medical evacuations and university corridors, against the backdrop of the historic commitment of Italian cooperation in Palestine.
Among the topics addressed are the fight against the looting and illicit trafficking of cultural goods, the subject of a high-profile event organised by Italy and Greece, in collaboration with the European Public Law Organisation (EPLO).
Part of the programme was dedicated to Maurizio Martina’s candidacy as FAO Director-General in the Food for Health, Food for Earth event, aimed at promoting the first International Day of the Mediterranean Diet – to be celebrated on 16 November this year – and at meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Solomon Islands, also demonstrating Italy’s focus on issues concerning small island states in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
Finally, at the Permanent Representation of Italy, Cirielli presided over a meeting of the Uniting for Consensus Group, with the aim of reviving Italy’s historic commitment within the UN to a more representative, modern and democratic Security Council.
