Italian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Edmondo Cirielli is attending the “Paris Summit for a New Global Financing Pact” on behalf of the Italian Government. The summit, hosted by French President Macron, is attended by over fifty countries and international organisations representing the most advanced economies and the economies of emerging and developing countries, as well as by representatives of civil society.
The Paris meeting, announced by President Macron on the occasion of the UN Climate Change Conference held in Sharm el Sheikh in November 2022 (COP27), is convened ahead of the G20 Summit in September, the World Bank annual meetings (October) and COP28 (December). The common goal is to listen to the needs of developing countries with regard to combating poverty and climate change, along with the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, to take stock of existing initiatives, to create a climate of mutual trust, and to utilise public resources for the sake of development and to make more efficient use of existing ones.
Participants are expected to include German Chancellor Scholz, US Secretary of the Treasury Yellen, Chinese Premier Li Qang, President of the European Commission von der Leyen, Brazilian President Lula, as well as leaders of the United Nations and of International Financial Institutions.
