Del Re at a virtual meeting on food security and nutrition

Deputy Minister Emanuela Del Re opened today the Videoconference meeting of the Group of Friends of Food Security and Nutrition at the United Nations, chaired by Italy. The President of the UN General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, and the Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, participated in the videoconference, among others.

“Two months ago, we brought this group together with the idea that only collective international action could help resolve the current global crisis” recalled the Deputy Minister. “We must now strengthen our efforts in view of the 2021 World Food Systems Summit. We want this to be an important event, with concrete results: an inclusive platform mobilizing all influential international actors. As pointed out by President Conte, Italy is strongly committed to the success of the Summit”.

“Both the Italian presidency of the G20 and the COP 26, which we will co-host together with the UK, will give priority to the creation of resilient and sustainable food systems. We must remember that the current health crisis deepens the current food crises. As Chair of this group, it is my duty to invite you all to engage, together with the relevant actors, in building or rebuilding sustainable food chains”, she continued.

The Deputy Minister then thanked the UN agencies in Rome for their crucial role in the matter. “We need to achieve what world leaders have envisioned for 2030: we can accelerate towards the “Zero Hunger” goal, with a coordinated and cohesive action.
