Guatemala

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has learnt with regret the decision of the Government of Guatemala to not ask for a renewal of the mandate for the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). It will therefore naturally and definitively expire in September 2019, preventing the current CICIG Commissioner Ivàn Velàsquez from re-entering the country on grounds of public security.

Ever since its establishment, CICIG has been a crucial instrument for the protection of the Rule of Law, resulting in an efficient cooperation with competent Guatemalan institutions and support from many States (including Italy) through the United Nations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hopes that the Government of Guatemala reassesses its position on CICIG. To this end, the Ministry reiterates Italy’s availability to continue the cooperation between the two Governments.
