As part of the mission to New York on the occasion of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, participated, on behalf of Minister Tajani, in the high-level side event “International Support for Peace, Unity, and Prosperity in Libya”.
The meeting, chaired by Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President on Arab and African Affairs, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, brought together some of the key international partners involved in the Libyan situation, together with the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, with the aim of strengthening international coordination and support for the path towards the unification of Libyan institutions, the country’s stability and security, and elections.
In her speech, Undersecretary Tripodi reiterated Italy’s strong support for US action, complementary to the UN efforts and to the Roadmap drawn up by UNSMIL, stressing the importance of consolidating the progress made in the dialogue between Libyan actors and in the implementation of the agreement reached in the context of the Small Convening, whose first meeting was held in Rome on 29 April.
The participation of Undersecretary Tripodi in the meeting confirmed the importance Italy attaches to stability of Libya and to coordination with its main international partners, as part of its support for the political process facilitated by the United Nations.
