TURKEY – Sparkle aims for environmental sustainability through the adoption of lithium-ion batteries in its Istanbul Data Center
Sparkle, the international service division of the TIM Group and among the world’s ten top operators, announced the adoption of high energy density lithium-ion batteries (Li-on) for the uninterruptible power source (UPS) units in its Istanbul Data Center, thus turning it into the first “green” data center in Turkey. Sparkle’s Data Center in Istanbul is the first to be equipped with this innovative energy storage system in Istanbul, offering its customers benefits in terms of environmental sustainability and exclusive advantages that enable them to increase the space available for their servers. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, which are currently the most widespread energy storage technology, lithium-ion batteries for UPS last twice as long, occupy a third of the space and weigh 60-80% less. Furthermore, they do not need to be ventilated, thus reducing the need for cooling and producing a lower environmental impact. Situated in Yenibosna, Sparkel’s Data Center is one of the largest and most important colocation facilities in Turkey, equipped with the best technologies and sophisticated monitoring systems available on the market and serviced by Seabone, Sparkle’s global IP Tier-1 Transit service. Sparkle plans to further expand its investments in Data Center and Cloud computing services in Istanbul with the aim of improving sustainability and providing its customers a safer and state-of-the-art technology environment for their IT systems.
