In order to mark the bicentenary of the death of Antonio Canova, the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague, in association with the National Gallery Prague, shall pay homage to the great Venetian artist with a conference honouring his timeless genius. Canova’s masterpieces, inspired by classical art, can be found in the most important museums in the world including the Louvre and the Hermitage, and have influenced generations of artists.
The conference, to be held on February 16 in the Baroque chapel of the Italian Cultural Institute, will examine the work of the sculptor and artist. His birthplace of Possagno is home to a Gypsotheca that is dedicated to him and holds most of his works. Among others, the following will give talks on Casanova: Moira Mascotto, director of the Canova Foundation non-profit organisation and the Possagno Museum, Petr Šámal, curator of the collection of prints and drawings of the National Gallery Prague who will talk about “The legacy of Antonio Canova in Central Europe” and Susanna Z. Wagner, curator of the collection of modern and contemporary art at the National Gallery Prague who will focus on the legacy of Antonio Canova in the contemporary scene.
