“Egypt must open a new stage of dialogue and national reconciliation as the only approach to overcome their differences”. These were the words of Foreign Minister Emma Bonino, who is following developments in Egypt closely. “I strongly urge all Egyptian institutional and political actors, and civil society too, to play their part – both in their language and in their conduct – in promoting pacification and stability in Egypt”.
“I am deeply concerned by the acts of violence and intimidation against the population in general and against public officials. I expect Mohamed Morsi to be treated in a manner that complies with the principles of the rule of law. And I expect arbitrary arrests of political leaders and journalists to be halted”, the foreign minister underscored.
“Further tension and fighting in the country’s streets and squares are not what Egypt needs. It needs an immediate return to a climate of dialogue and peaceful debate by all parties concerned”, concluded Minister Bonino.
