Libya: Terzi meets Ban Ki Moon’s Special Representative. Enhanced Italy-UN cooperation to support Libyan stabilisation

Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi received Tarek Mitri, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), in Rome today. The Special Representative is in the capital to take part in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mediterranean Conference, being held at the Farnesina.

Minister Terzi reiterated Italy’s determination to collaborate closely with UNSMIL, especially in the border control and security sectors. He expressed his hope that the UN Mission would play an increasingly important role in guiding and coordinating the international community’s efforts in support of the Libyan authorities.

Special Representative Mitri underscored Italy’s role in the democratic stabilisation process in Libya and in supporting the country’s economic and civil development. He thanked the Italian Government for its collaboration with the UN agencies operating there.

Italy is, to date, the only country to have concluded wide-ranging political agreements with the new Libya. These encompass sectors such as migration, defence, security and capacity building, in the framework of the Tripoli Declaration of 21 January 2012.
