Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi sent his condolences to the family of Reginald Bartholomew in which he expressed his “deep esteem and sincere affection” for the American diplomat who passed away yesterday, the news of which Minister Terzi received “with deep sorrow”.
“Bartholomew”, Terzi wrote, “was in the forefront of American diplomacy and a great friend to Italy, where he served as Ambassador from 1993 to 1997. He left an indelible impression on me personally and on all those who had the privilege of working with him”.
“With the passing of Ambassador Bartholomew, Italy loses a sincere friend, whose efforts at strengthening bilateral relations were untiring”, Minister Terzi continued.
In the course of his mission in Rome, Ambassador Bartholomew distinguished himself for his ability to nourish mutual understanding and solid alliance, cultivating the deep roots of US-Italian relations in the name of freedom, peace, democracy and justice”.
“Among the many high level positions of responsibility that Reginald Bartholomew held at the Department of State, the Pentagon and the National Security Council”, Terzi concluded, “I would like to recall his contribution within the context of decisive negotiations on Atlantic security, his crucial role in disarmament talks with the Soviet Union and his work as Ambassador in Lebanon, where he was wounded in the attack against the US Embassy in Beirut in a context in which the US and Italy worked side by side for the stability and peace of that country in especially dramatic and painful circumstances”.
