“The news of the discovery of a mass grave in Daraya horrifies and profoundly disturbs, as does all violence. It is further and tragic proof that the situation in Syria is no longer sustainable”. This was Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi’s statement, according to whom, “there will have to be an independent inquest to ascertain the facts, with the firm understanding that lasting peace in Syria hinges on Assad’s relinquishing power”.
“The Syrian society”, Terzi underscored,“has the right to begin, as soon as possible, to lay the foundations of a stable and peaceful co-existence for all its components, and the only way”, the minister repeats, “is through a Syrian-led political transition based on the principles of democracy, inclusion and full respect for human rights”.
