The Deputy Secretary General

Carlo LO CASCIO

Born in Palermo on 3 September 1963, Carlo Lo Cascio graduated in Law from the University of Palermo.

He joined the diplomatic service in 1990 and began his career at the Directorate General for Development Cooperation.

In 1994, he became First Secretary at the Economy and Trade Office of the Italian Embassy in Bonn.

From 1998 to 2001 he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo.

Promoted to Counsellor in 2000, from 2001 to 2004 he held the position of Deputy Head of the NATO Office at the Directorate General for Multilateral Political Affairs of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2005 he was promoted to Embassy Counsellor and from 2005 to 2008 he served as First Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Belgrade.

From 2008 to 2012, he served as Italian Ambassador to Mozambique, accredited to the Kingdom of Swaziland.

He was promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary in January 2012; from June to December of the same year, he held the position of EU-Africa Coordinator at the Italian Directorate General for Global Affairs.

From 2014 to 2018, he served as Deputy Director General for the European Union/Principal Director for the Countries of Europe, after having served one year as Head of the Balkan Countries Unit.

From April 2018 to June 2022, he held the post of Ambassador in Belgrade.

Since 1 July 2022, he has been Deputy Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

He was appointed to the rank of Ambassador on 9 January 2025.

Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2024).

He is married and has two children.
