“An accord that is an important step toward a solution to the crisis”, commented Minister Giulio Terzi on the news of the ceasefire in Gaza, in effect as of 20:00 on Wednesday. “This achievement”, Terzi underscored, “is the fruit of the intense diplomatic activities of Western and regional democracies, in which Italy has played an active role maintaining constant contact with its main European partners and with Egypt and Turkey”.
Terzi- Kamel Amr speak by telephone
Egypt has had a “decisive role in achieving this truce”, Terzi underscored, who spoke by telephone today with his colleague Kamel Amr, to whom he extended Italy’s deep appreciation. Terzi also expressed his “deep regret for the death and destruction caused by the recent hostilities and major concern for their possible impact on the stability of the entire region”, also expressing his “satisfaction with the ceasefire in Gaza, which puts an end to the intolerable suffering of the civilian population”, while underscoring “Israel’s right to its own security”.
Terzi-Riyad Malki to meet on Friday in Rome
Terzi reiterated his hope that this cessation of hostilities would be “the first step toward revival of the dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, a goal for which Italy will continue to strive actively together with its main partners and regional actors”. Apropos of which, Terzi pointed out to his Egyptian colleague that international efforts to reach a lasting solution would be the central focus of his meeting on Friday at the foreign ministry in Rome with Palestinian foreign minister Riyad Malki.
