“He’s safe and we expect to see him soon back in Italy”, were Minister Giulio Terzi’s words as he announced the conclusion of the affair regarding Italian technician Mario Belluomo, abducted in Syria on 12 December.
“At this time”, Terzi continued, “along with great satisfaction for this positive outcome, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the State apparatus that worked toward this achievement, beginning with the Crisis Unit”. A total of 31 Italian nationals abducted outside of Italy have been brought home in little more than a year.
“It is with great relief that we await engineer Belluomo’s return home, considering the risk his own life was at in a country overwhelmed by an unheard of violence that most often targets innocent civilians”, Terzi concluded.
The foreign ministry renewed an appeal it has repeated often over recent months urging Italian nationals to avoid Syria.
